“The Roman ‘Memento Mori’ Story Got Remixed 🏛️ #Shorts”
Everyone says Roman generals heard ‘memento mori’ whispered behind them during a triumph, but the earliest source says something different. The Christian writer Tertullian (around 197 CE) wrote: ‘respice post te, hominem te memento,’ meaning ‘Look behind you, remember you are a man.’ That sentence doesn’t contain ‘memento mori,’ and Tertullian never says the whisperer was a slave. The catchy ‘memento mori’ version took hold later through Christian tradition, and historian Mary Beard notes the ancient accounts conflict, so parts of the story may be myth-making.
